Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (November 10, 2007) - The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team fell in three games to visiting Eckerd College by the scores of 30-20, 30-23, and 30-27. NSU falls to 25-9, 11-5 in Sunshine State Conference play while Eckerd improves to 23-10, 9-7 SSC. The Sharks finish SSC play in a tie for second place with Florida Southern and will now wait to receive a bid for NCAA Division II post-season play for the first time in program history.
Eckerd hit .333 in game one to win 30-20. The Sharks couldn't overcome 11 hitting errors in the game en route to a .023 hitting percentage. Opposite Aley Tallman (So., Wichita, Kan) led the Sharks charge with three kills and also had five assists. Eckerd was led by middle Keisha Carter with five kills.
Five kills from middle Melinda Gorman (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.) wasn't enough for NSU to win in game two as the Sharks fell 30-23. The Tritons out-hit NSU .163 to .102 in the game. Setter Valia Petrova (Jr., Sofia, Bulgaria) had 11 assists and five digs for the Sharks. Outside hitter Marin Gibson tallied four kills for Eckerd.
Game three saw 10 ties and four lead changes before Eckerd took control late to win 30-27. The Tritons hit .143 while limiting NSU to a .128 attack percentage. Tallman once again led the Sharks with five kills while Eckerds Lydee Benoit had four to lead the visitors.
For the match Eckerd out-hit NSU .207 to .086. The Tritons recorded five more kills, four more assists, and 12 more digs than the Sharks in the match. NSU out-blocked Eckerd 8.5 to six.
Tallman led all players with 11 kills to go along with five assists, and nine digs. Gorman followed with nine kills. Petrova had 28 assists in the match and 13 digs.
Keisha Carter led all Eckerd players with 11 kills.
The match was the final home match of the careers of seniors Jenny Fitch (Batavia, Ill.) and Jessica Donisi (Palm Bay, Fla.) The two players were honored in a ceremony before the match.
NSU awaits a post-season bid to play in the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament. Bids will be announced at 9am on Monday, November 12th.
