MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (December 28, 2007) - Although Nova Southeastern (5-4) led Bentley (7-4) 34-27 at halftime, the Falcons outscored the Sharks 41-26 in the second half en route to a 68-60 victory over NSU on Friday afternoon in day one of the Barry Holiday Classic at Barry's Health and Sports Center.
With five minutes remaining in the first half, Abbie Tepe (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) made a layup followed by a jumper by LaShawnna Edwards (So., North Miami Beach, Fla.) giving NSU it's largest lead of the game at 31-19. Back-to-back threes by Bentley's Kim Brennan and Kristy McLean with three minutes trimmed the Sharks' lead to six before NSU closed the half up by seven.
In the second half, Bentley started on a 25-10 run capped by a layup from Erica Kirwin as the Falcons gained all of the momentum from the Sharks, outshooting NSU 43.9 percent to 29.4 percent in the second half to pull away for the eight-point victory.
For the game, NSU only shot 31.9 percent from the field on 22-of-69 shooting while Bentley shot 43.9 percent on 25-of-57 from the field.
McLean and Kirwin both recorded double-doubles with 15 points, 11 rebounds and 13 points, 11 rebounds, respectively. Brennan also added 11 points. Although struggling from the field, Stephanie Sarosi (So., Mims, Fla.) led the Sharks with her second consecutive double double, scoring 14 points on 6-of-14 shooting and collecting 13 boards while Eliza Allen (Jr., Hegenheim, France) added 11 points.
In addition to Bentley's effort, the absence of Amber Bishko (Sr., Orlando, Fla.) led to the Sharks' demise in the second half. Bishko played 11 minutes and scored four points and grabbed five rebounds before injuring her foot in the first half.
NSU will return to action on Saturday, December 29 as they will face the Shaw Lady Bears on day two of the Barry Holiday Classic at 4pm. The game will be a rematch of NSU's thrilling come-from-behind 77-70 victory over Shaw two weeks ago in Raleigh, N.C.
