Romain Onteniente (So., Nice, France) scored two goals, including the equalizer and the game-winner, as the ninth-ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks (6-0) came from behind to defeat the Saint Thomas Bobcats (1-3-1) by a score of 2-1 in overtime on Wednesday night at the NSU Soccer Complex. The Sharks managed to remain undefeated despite being a man down for most of the game.
In the 30th minute, freshman defender John Barker (Bishop Auckland, England) was given a red card and sent off for an ill-advised slide tackle.
Despite the disadvantage, NSU outshot the Bobcats 5-4 in the first half.
In the 60th minute, Stefan Peretz gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead, bending a direct free kick from outside the 18 and into the top left corner of the goal.
Less than a minute later, Romain Onteniente (So., Nice, France) equalized, scoring on an identical free kick from outside the 18 for his sixth goal of the season.
The game remained knotted at 1-1 until Onteniente struck again in the 99th minute, receiving a pass from NSU captain Craig Heenighan (Fr., Widnes, England) and slotting the ball from the left of the 18-yard box past Bobcats' goalkeeper Diego Villegas.
Onteniente's game-winner sent the NSU bench into a frenzy which saw the Sharks mob the forward while he was sliding head first along the touch line.
Sharks' keeper Jarod Rennick (Sr., Allen, Texas) made five saves while Villegas made four.
NSU will be back in action on Saturday, September 15 as they host the Saint Leo Lions in the Sharks' SSC opener at 6pm at the NSU Soccer Complex.
