West Palm Beach, Fla. (September 4, 2007) The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team was defeated 3-1 on the road by the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish on Tuesday evening by the scores of 30-24, 23-30, 30-32, and 28-30. The loss drops NSU to 5-4 on the season while PBA improves to 5-4.
Game one was controlled by the Sharks, as they coasted to a 30-24 victory. Outside hitter Paola Ruiz (Fr., Rio Piedras, P.R.) led the charge, recording five kills in the game. NSU out-hit PBA .220 to .070.
Palm Beach Atlantic came out firing in game two, hitting .222 to .143 for the Sharks. Middle Melinda Gorman (Sarasota, Fla.) and outside hitter Aley Tallman (So., Wichita, Kan.) each sent home five kills for the visitors.
The Sharks led game three 15-10 before PBA stormed back to win 32-30. Even though the Sharks out-hit PBA .170 to .098, 11 attack errors and seven service errors helped the Sailfishs cause. Tallman once again led the Sharks with seven kills.
Game four was a back and forth affair right until the end when PBA emerged as the 30-28 victors. The Sharks were held to a .064 attack percentage in the final game while PBA hit .178. Gorman totaled five kills for NSU in the closing game.
For the match, NSU out-hit PBA .147 to .144. Gorman led all players with 15 kills, followed closely by Tallman with 14 and Ruiz with 13. Petrova set the tempo for the Sharks, recording 52 assists and 23 digs.
Ali Mitchell and Brittany Erickson led PBA with 14 and 13 kills, respectively.
NSU returns home to play Flagler College at 7pm on Friday, September 7th in the University Center Arena.
