NSU Runs Out of Time With Florida Southern

Sharks Cut the Lead Late, But Fall 2-1

Craig Heenighan
LAKELAND, Fla. (Oct. 1, 2008) - The Nova Southeastern University men's soccer team took on conference foe Florida Southern Wednesday night in a hard fought battle to the end. The Sharks (6-4-1, 0-2) got on the board late in the second half to cut Florida Southern's 2-0 lead to one, but the Moccasins (2-6, 1-2) held on thanks to senior, Emil Kumlin and his two goals.

The Sharks offense managed to out-shoot Florida Southern for only the second time all year. Nova sophomore, Craig Heenighan (Widnes, England) deposited the only goal of the night off a penalty kick with 5:59 left to play in the match. The Sharks then smelled blood, as they continued to attack the Maccasin's defense. With just over three minutes to play, Nova Southeastern's David Wahlberg (Jr., Skanor, Sweden) found himself a seam and attempted a shot that was denied by Florida Southern's goalie Johan Jonsson. Jonsson had three saves on the night.

The Sharks managed to put together one last attempt to score as they streaked down the field fighting not only the Maccasin's defense, but also the clock. Nova managed to get the ball to 2007 First Team All-SSC Selection Aly Hassan (So., Weston, Fla.) with intentions of sending the game to overtime, but all hopes were kicked away when the Maccasin's offensive hero, Emil Kumlin, was able to disrupt Hassan and put the ball out of play. Time would then soon expire, and the Sharks would come up short in Lakeland 2-1.

The men are scheduled to continue play again this Saturday, October 4th at the NSU Soccer Complex at 7:00 pm against Lynn University.
