NSU Volleyball Sweeps Rollins College 3-0 In SSC Tilt

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Oct. 11, 2008)  The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 sweep of Rollins College in a Sunshine State Conference match on Saturday afternoon inside the University Center Arena by the scores of 26-24, 25-20, and 25-20. The win, NSUs third in a row, improves the Sharks record to 15-5 on the season, including 4-2 in SSC play. Rollins falls to 16-9 and 2-6 SSC.

The first set was a struggle for NSU, but they were able to cling to their lead and win 26-24. Middles Emily Carle (Sr., Missouri City, Tex.) and Molly Sigerich (Fr., Downers Grove, Ill.) combined with outside hitter Christina Chubb (Sr., Oakland Park, Fla.) for 12 kills in the set. The Sharks hit .191 as a team and held Rollins to a .054 attack percentage.

The Sharks shifted their offensive attack into overdrive in the second set en route to a 25-20 victory. Outside hitter Melinda Gorman (Sr., Sarasota, Fla.) posted four kills and no errors in eight attempts for a .500 attack percentage while Sigerich, Chubb and Jenerra McGruder (Jr., Euless, Tex.) each tallied three kills apiece. Chubb, Carle and Sigerich each had two blocks in the set as the Sharks out-hit Rollins .350 to .268.

The offensive explosion carried over into the third set for NSU as they came away with another 25-20 win. Sigerich and Groman each added four more kills, with neither player recording an error in the set. Carle and Paola Ruiz (So., Rio Piedras, P.R) contributed with three kills each. AVCA Division II National Player of the Week Valia Petrova (Sr., Sofia, Bulgaria) added two kills and 13 assists. The Sharks hit a match high .386 in the set.

For the match, NSU out-hit Rollins .305 to .211. The Sharks had 15 more kills, ten more assists and 18 more points.

Sigerich led the Sharks with 11 kills to go along with three digs and four blocks. Gorman had ten kills, followed by Carle with nine and McGruder and Chubb with seven. Petrova distributed 38 assists, had four kills and four digs. Libero Kathleen Yony (So., Miami, Fla.) contributed with 12 digs while defensive specialist Alison Kalish (Jr., Miami, Fla.) had 10.

NSU will travel to Boca Raton, Fla. to play Lynn in a Sunshine State Conference match on Tuesday, October 14th at 7 pm.
