Flagler College Shocks NSU Volleyball In Four Sets

Sharks Help The Saints Cause With 50 Errors

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (Oct. 24, 2008) - The Nova Southeastern University was upset in four sets by the Flagler College Saints by the scores of 16-25, 25-15, 21-25 and 19-25 in Flagler Gym on Friday evening. The loss snaps a five game winning streak and drops the Sharks record to 17-6 on the season while Flagler improves to 18-14 on the season.

The Sharks struggled in game one, committing nine attack errors with a .000 hitting percentage while Flagler hit .231 as a team. NSU was led by freshman middle blocker Molly Sigerich (Downers Grove, Ill.) with three kills.

NSU rebounded in the second set, hitting .500 as a team with 14 kills and one error in 26 attempts. The Sharks also limited Flagler to just six kills and a .050 hitting percentage.

The Saints were able to finish a back and forth set on top in the third set, helped by a late 7-2 surge. Nova Southeastern regressed to first set form, hitting just .154 as a team in the set while Flagler rebounded to hit .265.

NSU was unable to recover in the fourth set, once again hitting .000 as a team. Flagler had 11 kills and a .108 attack percentage.

For the match, Flagler out-hit NSU .171 to .158. Middles Emily Carle (Sr., Missouri City, Tex.) and Sigerich helped keep NSU in the match, with Carle slamming a team high 12 kills and Sigerich with nine. Both middles posted a .400 hitting percentage. Setter Valia Petrova (Sr., Sofia, Bulgaria) tallied 36 assists while outside hitter Paola Ruiz (So., Rio Piedras, P.R.) had a match high 14 digs.

Justine Burkhardt and Meg Weathersby tied with 11 kills to pace Flagler in the upset.

Nova Southeastern will remain on the road, traveling to Daytona Beach, Fla. to play Embry-Riddle at 4 pm on Saturday, October 25th. The match can be heard live on the NSU Athletics Audiocast Network.
