FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Nov. 24, 2008) - Nova Southeastern University volleyball setter Valia Petrova (Sr., Sofia, Bulgaria) was named to the 2008 Division II DAKTRONICS All-South Region Volleyball Team. The honor was Petrova's third of the week, as she was previously named to the All-Sunshine State Conference first team and listed on the NCAA Division II South Regional All-Tournament team.
Petrova, who received honorable mention honors a year ago, landed on the second team this year. She has started all 35 matches, playing in 137 sets. Valia is ranked second in the Sunshine State Conference and nationally ranked with 9.82 assists per set. She is the only person in the nation to record a triple-double with assists, digs, and aces in 2008. Petrova became the first player in NSU volleyball history to be named the AVCA National Player of the Week when she received the award on 10/7/08. She also leads the team and is in the top ten nationally with 84 aces and 0.61 aces per set.
Valia has saved her best performances for when they mattered the most, setting a new career high with 12 kills in the NCAA Division II South Regional Finals vs. West Florida on 11/22/08. She fell just one dig shy of a triple-double in that match, posting 12 kills, 50 assists and nine digs. Petrova established a new season high with 61 assists vs. Saint Leo University in the South Regional Semi-Finals vs. Saint Leo on 11/21/08.
For her career, Petrova holds the NSU single season assists record with 1,560 assists in 2007. She also set a program record for most service aces in a single match with 10 against Wisconsin-Parkside on 9/6/08. Valia also hold program records for total assists, assists per game, aces and aces per game.
Petrova will look to lead her team to victory in the NCAA Division II Volleyball National Championships, starting on Thursday, Dec. 4th vs. Truman State University at 7:30 pm in St. Paul, Minnesota.
