MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Nov. 5, 2008) - The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team suffered a three sets to none setback at Barry University in play on Wednesday evening. The loss drops the Sharks to 20-8 overall and 8-4 in Sunshine State Conference play while Barry improves to 13-10 overall and 5-9 SSC.
NSU struggled in the opening set, losing 25-14. The Sharks were out-hit .387 to .053. Six kills and no errors from Camilla Pagnan and five kills and no errors from Julia Ridley helped catapult the Bucs in the win. Junior outside hitter Jenerra McGruder (Euless, Tex.) paced the Sharks with three kills. Libero Alison Kalish (Jr., Miami, Fla.) totaled seven digs in the set.
The struggles continued in the second set for NSU as they fell 25-20. The Sharks hit .000 as a team with nine kills and nine errors in 34 attempts. Barry was just better, hitting .054 as a team. McGruder once again led Nova Southeastern with four kills. Pagnan added five kills for Barry.
Things tightened in the third set as the Sharks tried to mount a comeback, but fell short by a 25-23 score. Christina Chubb (Sr., Oakland Park, Fla.) kept NSU in the set, which had had seven ties and four lead changes, with four kills. NSU hit .114 as a team in the set while Barry registered a .207 attack percentage.
For the match, McGruder led the Sharks with nine kills. She was followed by Chubb and Paola Ruiz (So., Rio Piedras, P.R.) with five. Setter Valia Petrova (Sr., Sofia, Bulgaria) had 23 assists and six digs while Kalish tallied a team high 14 digs.
Pagnan carried Barry with 17 kills and a .310 attack percentage. Bucs setter Libby Walker had 27 assists, three aces and seven digs.
NSU will remain on the road, traveling to Lakeland, Fla. on Friday, November 7th, to play Florida Southern College at 7 pm.
