SAINT LEO, Fla. (Nov. 8, 2008) - The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team swept the Saint Leo University Lions in three sets by the scores of 25-20, 25-14 and 25-20 in action on Saturday afternoon inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center. The win improves the Sharks record to 21-9 on the season and 9-5 in Sunshine State Conference play while Saint Leo falls to 26-10, 6-8 SSC.
The Sharks came out strong in the opening set, posting a match high 18 kills en route to the 25-20 victory. NSU hit .33 as a team while Saint Leo was at .257. Freshman middle Molly Sigerich (Downers Grove, Ill.) had a set high five kills, followed by Emily Carle (Sr., Missouri City, Tex.) with four kills. Setter Valia Petrova tallied 16 assists.
Nova Southeastern ran away with the second set, winning 25-14. NSU hit a match high .476, once again led by Sigerich with three kills. Saint Leo was limited to a .160 hitting percentage.
The Sharks carried the momentum over into the third set, winning 25-20. NSU hit .342 as a team, led by outside hitter Jenerra McGruder (Jr., Euless, Tex.) with five kills and no errors in 10 attempts. Christina Chubb (Sr., Oakland Park, Fla.) added three kills.
NSU hit .366 as a team for the match while Saint Leo was hitting at a .240 percentage. The Sharks were led by Sigerich and McGruder with 10 kills apiece. Carle followed with seven. Petrova contributed with five kills, 35 assists, five digs and three blocks.
Saint Leo was led by Kaitlin McKenna with nine kills.
The Sharks return home for senior day on Tuesday, November 11th vs. Lynn University inside the University Center at 7 pm.
