MORROW, Ga. (August 28, 2008) - The Nova Southeastern University men's soccer team earned a key 2-0 victory over Clayton State University in their season opener on Thursday evening. The win brings the Sharks record to 1-0 on the season while Clayton State falls to 0-1.
NSU almost scored just one minute and 15 seconds into the match when sophomore midfielder Craig Heenigan's (Widnes, England) shot was saved by Lakers goalie Glenn Fox.
Neither team was able to muster a goal in the opening half, as the Sharks had five shot attempts while Clayton State had eight. Nova Southeastern held the advantage in corner kicks three to one while Sharks' goalie Travis Frazier (Fr., West End, N.C.) had three more saves (5) than Fox (2).
Sharks newcomer David Wahlberg (Jr., Skanor, Sweden) put NSU up by one goal, scoring unassisted with a cross from the left top 54:30 into action.
A second yellow card two minutes later on the Lakers' Liam Brown put the Sharks one man up for the remainder of the match.
Nova Southeastern would take advantage with two minutes remaining, adding an insurance goal by Darryl Gordon (So., Miami, Fla.) from the top of the box that was assisted by Wahlberg and Juan Gonzalez (So., Oakland Park, Fla.).
The Sharks were out-shot by Clayton State 17-14 but led in corner kicks 6-4. Each goalie had six saves. The Lakers' out-fouled NSU 15-10, including 10-3 in the second half.
Nova Southeastern will travel to Americus, Ga. to play Georgia Southwestern University at 3pm on Saturday, August 30th.
