Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (Sep. 17, 2008) - The Nova Southeastern volleyball team defeated Palm Beach Atlantic University 3-1 by the scores of 25-12, 26-24, 22-25, 25-19 in action inside the University Center Arena on Wednesday evening. The win, NSU's seventh consecutive victory, bring their overall record to 10-3 on the season while the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish fall to 4-5.
Sharks setter Valia Petrova (Sr., Sofia, Bulgaria) set the tone from the opening serve for NSU, recording three kills, six assists, two aces, a dig and a block in the opening set as NSU won 25-12. The Sharks hit .320 as a team in the set.
Middle blocker Emily Carle (Sr., Missouri City, Tex.) took over for NSU in the second set, posting six kills and no errors in eight attempts as the Sharks won 26-24. Defensive specialist Kathleen Yony (So., Miami, Fla.) recorded five digs in the set.
Opposite Christina Chubb (Sr., Oakland Park, Fla.) had six kills for NSU in the third set, but it wasn't enough as the Sharks fell 25-22. Palm Beach Atlantic hit a match high .290 in the set, led by three kills from Brittany Erickson. Petrova had a season high 17 assists in the game for NSU.
Outside hitter Jenerra McGruder (Jr., Euless, Tex.) was a perfect six for six in attack attempts for the Sharks in the final set as NSU won 25-19. The Sharks hit a match high .440 as a team in the fourth set.
Carle set a new season high with 16 kills in the match. The 16 kills for Carle marks the fourth consecutive match that she has recorded a double figure kill total. She also had four blocks. Petrova fell one shy of a season high with 48 assists. Chubb had 11 kills while McGruder and outside hitter Melinda Gorman (Sr., Sarasota, Fla.) had nine kills, apiece.
Emily Ryerson and Brittany Erickson tied for the Palm Beach Atlantic lead with eight kills.
NSU will travel to Tampa, Fla. on Friday, September 26th to face No. 4 nationally ranked and defending SSC Champion University of Tampa at 7 pm.
