Midfielder Craig Heenigan Scores Game Winner For Sharks In 65th Minute

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Sept. 19, 2008) - The Nova Southeastern University men's soccer team defeated St. Thomas University (Fla.) 1-0 in action at the NSU Soccer Complex on Friday evening. The win brings Nova Southeastern's record to 5-1-1 on the season while St. Thomas falls to 3-2-0.

The two teams battled in a scoreless first half. While each team had four shots, NSU goalkeeper Travis Frazier (Fr., West End, Fla.) recorded three saves for the Sharks. Forward and defending Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year Romain Onteniente (Jr., Nice, France) had three shots, including one that was on goal.

NSU controlled the tempo of the match in the second half, tallying 13 shots to just four for St. Thomas. A packed NSU Soccer Complex erupted in the 65th minute, when midfielder Craig Heenigan (So., Widnes, England) broke the ice with a goal just inside the box, assisted by defender Tim Taylor (So., Farmington Hills, Mich.).

Onteniente posted three more shots in the second half, totaling six for the match. In addition to his goal, Heenigan had four shots, including two on goal. David Wahlberg (Jr., Skanor, Sweden) and Brian Cardozo (So., Davie, Fla.) each had two shots for the Sharks.

Frazier finished with three saves and improved to 5-1-1 as the goalie of record.

Gabe Renteria and Chris Jean had two shots apiece for St. Thomas University while goalkeeper Shaul Haigel finished the match with five saves.

For the match, NSU out-shot St. Thomas 17-8 and had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Nova Southeastern returns to play on Sunday, September 21st in Tampa, Fla. vs. the University of West Florida at 7pm in Pepin-Rood Stadium.
