ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Sept. 27, 2008) - The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team swept Eckerd College 3-0 by the scores of 25-19, 25-23, and 25-21 on the road in Sunshine State Conference action on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Sharks record to 11-4 (1-1 SSC) on the season while Eckerd College falls to 10-6 (1-2 SSC).
Setter Valia Petrova (Sr., Sofia, Bulgaria) led the Sharks to victory, falling just one kill shy of her second triple-double of the season. Petrova had nine kills, 23 assists and 10 digs in the three set sweep. Opposite Andrea Irarrazabal (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) tied Petrova for the team lead with nine kills. Emily Carle (Sr., Missouri City, Tex.), Molly Sigerich (Fr., Downers Grove, Ill.) and Melinda Gorman (Sr., Sarasota, Fla.) each had six kills for NSU. Defensive specialist Alison Kalish (Jr., Miami, Fla.) recorded eight digs.
NSU got off on the right foot in the first set, limiting Eckerd to a -.028 attack percentage. The momentum stayed on NSU's side for the second set, as the Tritons were held to just a .000 attack percentage. For the match, Eckerd was held to a .011 attack percentage.
The Sharks put the final nail in the coffin in the third set, hitting a team high .265 with 15 kills and six errors in 34 attempts.
Nova Southeastern will return home to host Florida Tech in a SSC match on Tuesday, September 30th at 7 pm inside the University Center Arena.
