FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Sept. 30, 2008) The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team easily disposed of Florida Tech in a 3-0 rout inside the University Center Arena on Tuesday evening. The 25-19, 25-13, and 25-13 victory improves the Sharks record to 12-4 and 2-1 in Sunshine State Conference play while Florida Tech falls to 16-4 and 1-3 in SSC play.
NSU started off slow, posting just a .164 attack percentage in the first set en route to the 25-19 win. Freshman middle blocker Molly Sigerich (Downers Grove, Ill.) was four for seven in attack attempts to lead the Sharks while libero Kathleen Yony (So., Miami, Fla.) tallied four digs. Florida Tech was limited to a .000 attack percentage.
The Sharks ran off to an early lead and cruised to the 25-13 victory in the second set. NSU hit a season high .615 in the set with 16 kills and no errors in 26 attempts. Setter Valia Petrova (Sr., Sofia, Bulgaria) recorded 12 assists, three kills and two digs while Melinda Gorman (Sr., Sarasota, Fla.) had five kills and Emily Carle (Sr., Missouri City, Tex.) had four.
The third set was more of the same as NSU once again won 25-13. Gorman remained on track, posting a set high five kills while Christina Chubb (Sr., Oakland Park, Fla.) had four. Petrova tallied a match high 13 assists.
For the match NSU out-hit Florida Tech .388 to .095 and registered 23 more kills than the Panthers. The Sharks had 23 more assists, 11 more aces, 12 more digs, six more blocks and 40 more total points in the lopsided battle.
Gorman led NSU with 12 kills, followed by Carle with eight, Sigerich with seven and Petrova and Chubb with six apiece. Petrova distributed 34 assists. Carle, Petrova and Jenerra McGruder (Jr., Euless, Tex.) each had three aces. Yony led the team with 12 digs.
Marcela Vasconcelos had a match high five kills for Florida Tech.
NSU remains at home to host Florida Southern College at 7 pm on Friday, October 3rd inside the University Center Arena.
