Sharks Pick Up Big SSC Win At Lynn

Boca Raton, Fla. (Oct. 13, 2009) - The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team swept Lynn University three sets to none in action on the road in Sunshine State Conference play on Tuesday evening. The win improves the Sharks record to 13-8 on the season, including 4-4 in SSC play while Lynn falls to 15-6, 4-4 SSC.

The Sharks took the first set 25-21 over the Fighting Knights. NSU hit .326 as a team while holding Lynn to just .162. Junior outside hitter Taylor Pohlman (Olathe, Kan.) paced the Sharks balanced attack with five kills while junior outside hitter Lucia Cizmarova (Bratislava, Slovak Republic) and freshman middle blocker Carly Perschnick (Dwight, Ill.) had four kills apiece. Senior All-America setter Valia Petrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) tallied 17 assists, one kill, one block and four digs.

Down 12-8 in the second set, the Sharks started to mount a comeback. NSU tied the score at 20 apiece before Lynn went on a 3-0 run to put the Sharks down 23-20. NSU re-grouped to run off five consecutive points to take a two-set to none advantage. Cizmarova led the Sharks in the set with five kills and Petrova added 13 more assists and four more digs. NSU hit .275 as a team in the set. Lynn hit .195.

The seventh time serving on match point was a charm as they won 35-33. Cizmarova and Perschnick combined for 10 of the Sharks 26 kills in the set. The team hit at a .221 clip while Lynn was at .218. Petrova added 16 more assists.

For the match, the Sharks out-hit Lynn .265 to .195. NSU had 19 more kills, 17 more assists, and 10 more digs than the Fighting Knights.

Cizmarova had a match high 14 kills in the Sharks balanced offensive attack. Pohlman followed with 12 kills while Perschnick had 11 and sophomore middle blocker Molly Sigerich (Downers Grove, Ill.) had 10. Petrova totaled 46 assists, six kills and 12 digs. Junior libero Kathleen Yony (Miami, Fla.) had a team high 17 digs.

Kala Abdell recorded a team high 11 kills for Lynn.

NSU travels to St. Petersburg, Fla. to play Eckerd in SSC play on Friday, October 23rd at 7 pm.
