Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (Nov. 10, 2009) - The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team defeated Lynn University in three sets in Sunshine State Conference play on Tuesday evening inside the Don Taft University Center. The win, NSU fourth consecutive SSC win and their 10th win in 11 home matches, improves their record to 18-9 overall and 9-5 in SSC play. Lynn falls to 18-11 and 5-9 in SSC play.
The Sharks posted their best offensive numbers in the first set 25-23 win. NSU hit .256 as a team, led by sophomore middle blocker Molly Sigerich (Downers Grove, Ill.) and sophomore outside hitter Anabely Escarpita. Sigerich and Escarpita had three kills apiece. Senior All-America setter Valia Petrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) had two kills, 13 assists, two digs and an ace. Lynn hit .250 as a team and posted four blocks.
Even though the Sharks hit just .000 as a team, they were able to come away with the 25-23 second set victory. Sigerich once again led the Sharks with four kills. Freshman middle blocker Carly Perschnick (Dwight, Ill.) tallied three blocks, including two solos.
Down almost the entire third set, NSU found a way to escape with the 26-24 win. Hitting .231 as a team, the Sharks were led by junior outside hitter Taylor Pohlman (Olathe, Kan.) and senior outside hitter Jenerra McGruder (Euless, Tex.) with three kills apiece. Petrova added 10 assist and six digs in the set.
For the match, NSU out-hit Lynn .161 to .137. Sigerich had a team high eight kills to go along with an ace, three digs and two blocks. McGruder and Pohlman followed with seven kills each. Junior libero Kathleen Yony (Miami, Fla.) registered a team high 14 digs while Perschnick totaled a team high six blocks.
The Sharks will host Florida Southern in a SSC match on Friday, November 13th at 7 pm inside the Don Taft University Center.
