Sharks Defeat Florida Southern 3-1; Win 5th Straight SSC Match

Middle Blocker Molly Sigerich Tallies Team High 14 Kills

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (Nov. 13, 2009) - The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team defeated Florida Southern 3-1 in a Sunshine State Conference match inside the Don Taft University Center on Friday evening. The win, NSU's fifth consecutive in SSC play, improves their record to 19-9 on the season and 10-5 in SSC play. Florida Southern concludes their season 14-18 and 5-11 in SSC play.

The Sharks fought off a Moccasin rally to win the first set, 27-25. The Sharks hit .256 as a team while FSC hit .233. Middle blockers Molly Sigerich (So., Downers Grove, Ill.) and Carly Perschnick (Fr., Dwight, Ill.) paced the Sharks attack along with outside hitter Taylor Pohlman (Jr., Olathe, Kan.) with four kills. Junior libero Kathleen Yony (Miami, Fla.) tallied five digs.

Behind seven kills from Julia Borecka, Florida Southern rallied for a 28-26 win in the second set. NSU was limited to a .195 attack percentage. Sigerich and senior outside hitter Jenerra McGruder (Euless, Tex.) tied for the set high with four kills apiece.

Hitting .304 as a team, the Sharks won the third set 25-20. Outside hitters Lucia Cizmarova (Jr., Bratislava, Slovak Republic) and Anabely Escarpita (So., Boca Raton, Fla.) has three kills apiece to lead the Sharks attack. Defensive specialist Alison Kalish (Sr., Miami, Fla.) and Sigerich each had an ace.

Sigerich and Perschnick led the Sharks to a 25-21 fourth set victory. Sigerich had five kills and no errors in seven attempts with a block while Perschnick had four kills and an assist. Senior All-America setter Valia Petrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) distributed 11 assists and had six digs.

For the match, NSU out-hit Florida Southern .245 to .208. The Sharks out-aced the Mocs seven to three and had three more total blocks.

Sigerich posted a team high 14 kills and hit .571. She also had one assist, two aces, three digs and four blocks. Perschnick was also in double figures with 10 kills. McGruder had nine kills, followed by Cizmarova with eight and Escarpita with six. Petrova finished with 45 assists while Yony had 15 digs.

The Sharks remain at home to host SSC leading Saint Leo on Saturday, November 14th on senior day at 4 pm inside the Don Taft University Center.
