NSU Dismantles Florida Tech In 3-0 Sweep

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (Nov. 6, 2009) - The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team dismantled the Florida Tech Panthers in a 3-0 sweep in Sunshine State Conference action inside the Don Taft University Center on Friday evening. The win improves the Sharks record to 16-9 overall and 7-5 in SSC play while Florida Tech falls to 11-13, 2-11 in SSC play.

NSU quickly established their game plan against the Panthers in the first set, winning 25-17. The Sharks hit .419 as a team. Sophomore outside hitter Anabely Escarpita (Boca Raton, Fla.) had five kills and no errors in nine attempts for a .556 hitting percentage. Senior All-America setter Valia Petrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) posted 16 assists while junior libero Kathleen Yony (Miami, Fla.) totaled 11 digs.

While their hitting percentage dropped to .170 in the second set, the Sharks still came away with the 25-23 victory. Escarpita once again led NSU with five kills while freshman middle blocker Carly Perschnick (Dwight, Ill.) added four.

The Sharks put the match away by scoring the final seven points in the 25-19 win in the third set. Perschnick had a team high four kills as NSU hit .073 as a team. The Sharks forced Florida Tech to hit negative .081 in the set. Yony added ten more digs to her total.

For the match, NSU out-hit Florida Tech .219 to .153. The Sharks had 18 more kills, 18 more assists, three more aces, and 14 more digs.

Yony registered a career high for digs in a three set match with 27. Escarpita and Perchnick tied for the team lead with 11 kills. Petrova finished with 39 assists, 13 digs, four kills and two aces.

The Sharks remain at home to host Rollins College in a SSC match at 4 pm on Saturday, November 7th.
