PENSACOLA, Fla. (Sept. 12, 2009) - The #17 Nova Southeastern University volleyball team swept University of West Alabama by the scores of 25-22, 25-22 and 25-12 in play on Saturday afternoon to conclude play in the West Florida Crossover Tournament. The win improves the Sharks record to 8-4 on the season.
The Sharks came out firing on all cylinders in the first set, hitting .438 as a team en route to the 25-22 victory. Junior outside hitter Lucia Cizmarova (Bratislava, Slovak Republic) led the charge with four kills while junior outside hitter Taylor Pohlman (Olathe, Kan.), sophomore middle blocker Molly Sigerich (Downers Grove, Ill.) and freshman middle Rachel Woodson (Rogers, Ark.) had three kills apiece. West Alabama hit .323 as a team.
Once again NSU jumped out to an early lead in the second set, only to hold on for the 25-22 win. The Sharks hit .220 as a team with Pohlman leading the way with six kills. Senior setter Valia Petrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) contributed with 14 assists.
Nova Southeastern left no doubt in the third set, running away for a 25-12 win. Pohlman added six more kills as the Sharks hit .500 as a team and did not record a hitting error. Defensively, NSU limited West Alabama to a-.038 percentage. Junior libero Kathleen Yony (Miami, Fla.) had five digs in the set.
For the match, the Sharks out-hit West Alabama .361 to .160. NSU had nine more kills, 11 more assists, two more aces and five more total blocks. Pohlman led NSU with 15 kills and a .444 attack percentage adding five digs, a block and an ace. Cizmarova followed with eight kills while Sigerich had six, Woodson had five and Perschnick had four. Petrova finished with 25 assists on the day. Yony tallied a team high 12 digs.
Gabriela Pedrosa led West Alabama with eight kills.
The Sharks return to action at Barry University in their Sunshine State Conference opener on Tuesday, September 15th at 7 pm.
