FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Sept. 14, 2009) - The Nova Southeastern men's soccer team took their third straight victory by defeating the Florida Memorial Lions, 4-1 at the NSU Soccer Complex Monday night. After starting the season 1-2, they now head into conference play with a 4-2 record.
"I'm very happy with our performance tonight," said head coach Giuseppe DePalo. "We've had a good run of matches lately; we're looking forward to conference play."
Florida Memorial (2-3-2) struck first when the Lions scored less than ten minutes into the game. It did not take long for the Sharks to answer as Chris Pruitt (Jr., Detroit, Mich.) scored his first goal of the season just five minutes later. Romain Onteniente (Sr., Nice, France) assisted on the goal when he crossed the ball from the right side to Pruitt who scored five yards away from the goal.
The game winning goal came shortly after when Aly Hassan (Jr., Davie, Fla.) earned his second goal of the season in the 19th minute. Onteniente and David Wahlberg (Sr., Skanor, Sweden) each tallied an assist when they played the ball over the defense to Hassan who scored from the left side of the box. Onteniente's two assists put him just seven away from the NSU career record.
Hassan would earn his second goal of the day just 15 minutes into the second half. Craig Heenighan (Jr., Widnes, England) earned an assist by setting up Hassan who scored from the right side of the 18-yard box. The Junior forward would top off his performance by assisting on the last goal of the game. Darryl Gordon (Jr., Miami, Fla.) drove the nail in the coffin by scoring just 10 yards away from the center of the goal. Hassan finished with a season-high five points.
For the sixth consecutive game, the Sharks outshot their opponent, 23-12. Despite the Lion's low shot tally, Lorenzo Migliavacca (Jr., Varese, Italy) earned a season-high eight saves.
The Nova Southeastern men's soccer team will begin conference play this Friday, Sept. 18 on the road against No. 6 Lynn at 3 p.m.
