MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Sept. 15, 2009) - The #23 nationally ranked Nova Southeastern volleyball team dropped a four set decision to Barry University in their Sunshine State Conference opener on Tuesday evening. The loss drops the Sharks to 8-5 overall and 0-1 in SSC play while Barry improves to 8-1 (1-0 SSC).
The Sharks found themselves down late in the first set only to have their rally fall short in the 25-23 loss. Nine attack errors helped the Buccaneers cause as NSU posted two more kills (14-12) than Barry in the set. Barry out-hit NSU .212 to .135.
Nova Southeastern regrouped to take a commanding 19-11 lead in the second set but couldn't hold on in the 25-21 loss. Eight NSU attack errors aided Barry in the comeback as the Sharks hit .000 as a team in the set. The Buccaneers hit at a .237 clip.
NSU put together a solid third set to win 25-16. The team hit a match high .364 with 15 kills and only three errors in 33 attempts. The Sharks out-blocked the Buccaneers four to zero, limiting them to a .147 attack percentage.
Barry ran away with the fourth set to win 25-12. 10 NSU errors resulted in a negative hitting percentage of -.026 while Barry hit .250. BU turned the tables as they had four blocks to none for NSU.
For the match, Barry out-hit NSU .211 to .107. Even though the Sharks had only two less kills, a total of 30 attack errors limited NSU offensively. Freshman middle blocker Carly Perschnick (Dwight, Ill.) led Nova Southeastern with 12 kills while fellow middle blocker Molly Sigerich (So., Downers Grove, Ill.) followed with 11 and had a team high .364 attack percentage. Sigerich also contributed with five blocks while junior outside hitter Lucia Cizmarova (Bratislava, Slovak Republic) had a team high six blocks.
Julia Texiera led Barry with 14 kills, four aces and nine digs.
The Sharks return home to host #21 Eckerd College on Saturday, September 19th at 4 pm inside the Arena at the Don Taft University Center.
