Men's Soccer tops Eckerd 4-2

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
Freshman midfielder Matthew Ilter (Lake Mary, Fla.) led the Nova Southeastern University men's soccer team (5-4-2, 1-4-0 SSC) with two goals in their first Sunshine State Conference win Wednesday night. The Sharks won 4-2 over the Eckerd Tritons (5-6-0, 1-5-0 SSC), at the NSU Soccer Complex.

The Sharks struck first when Ilter slide kicked the ball for a goal off a rebound from the keeper in the 23rd minute of play for his third goal of the season. Thirteen minutes later, the Sharks' leading scorer Aly Hassan (Sr., Weston, Fla.) caught a through ball at the top of the box and danced around a defender before booting a 15-yard goal in the 36th minute to give the Sharks a 2-0 advantage.

The Tritons cut the lead to one with the last goal of the half when Matt Duffy converted on a penalty kick at the 37:14 mark.

After 45 minutes of action, NSU edged Eckerd in corner kicks 4-3, but the Tritons held an advantage in shots on goal 4-3.

Following halftime it only took the Sharks 2:28 took find the net, when Ilter converted his second goal of the game off a deflection in front of the goal for his fourth goal of the season. Just 0:12 seconds later, Eckerd answered when Anthony Arico converted for a goal to bring the Tritons back within one, 3-2.

The next 30 minutes saw more physical play as four yellow cars were handed out before senior Craig Heenighan (Widnes, England) put the match out of reach scoring off a corner kick from Stian Roa (Fr., Oslo, Norway). The goal was Heenighan’s second of the year, and it was Roa's third assist.

Overall, NSU held a 10-3 corner kick advantage, while edging Tritons 7-5 with shots-on-goal. Both keepers tallied three saves for the match.
