Box Score

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team (7-13, 2-7 SSC) fell to Eckerd (7-13, 1-9 SSC), 3-1, to give the Tritons their first conference win of the 2010 season.

After winning the first set, 25-18, Eckerd took the next three, 25-17, 25-18, 25-21. In the loss, the Tritons outhit the Sharks, .229 to .135.

Senior libero Kathleen Yony (Miami, Fla.) had a team high 23 digs, including 10 in the first set and sophomore Danielle Graham (Cincinnati, Ohio) was the lone Shark with double-digit kills with 12.

The Sharks got off to an ugly start in the first set as the Tritons took a 9-4 lead as NSU had four attack errors. Led by Graham, the Sharks fought back and used a 7-0 run to take a two point lead at 11-9. Graham had four kills and assisted on a block for NSU during the rally.

As Eckerd closed the gap to one at 15-14, NSU won the next four points to extend its lead to six and be the first to reach 20. Although Eckerd managed to score the next three points, the Sharks defeated the Tritons, 25-18 in the opener.

Just as in set one, Eckerd dominated the opening portion of the set but this time they ended up on top in the second set. The Sharks hit only .038 only managing to get five kills, with Anabely Escarpita (Jr., Boca Raton, Fla.) with three of them.

Evened at 1-1, the Sharks struggled for the second straight set to muster together any sort of offensive attack as NSU dropped set three, 25-18.

In the fourth set, the Sharks started the set with a back-and-forth battle with the Tritons. Tied at 7-7, Eckerd went on a 7-1 run before Wilcosky used his first timeout. Graham put up a solo block to force Eckerd to call a timeout as the Sharks pulled within three at 17-14. The Shark managed to rally and get within two at 23-21 by a kill by sophomore Rachel Woodson (Rogers, Ark.) but that was the last point they scored.

The Sharks will continue Sunshine State Conference play as NSU will square off against Saint Leo tomorrow at 4 p.m.
