FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Fresh off a victory on its home pitch last Tuesday, the Nova Southeastern women’s soccer team (9-4-1, 5-1-1 SSC) close out its season traveling to Saint Leo, Fla. to take on Saint Leo University (8-6-1, 3-3-1 SSC) tomorrow at 5 p.m.
NSU enters the match atop the SSC rankings, where the top two teams earn the right to host the league tournament and receive a first round bye. The conference tournament begins on Nov. 2.The Sharks carry 16 points and, with a win, are guaranteed first place in the SSC. Nova Southeastern is closely followed in points by Rollins with 15, and Florida Southern with 14.
The players to watch for this match are senior co-captain
Alexis Hernandez (Pembroke, Pines, Fla.) and freshman midfielder
Malin Broberg (Stockholm, Sweden). Hernandez leads the team with 10 goals on the year while dishing out an assist. Broberg follows by having dished out four assists on the year and striking three goals. Junior keeper
Chrissy Hy has been credited with 62 saves on the year, a career high, while owning a 0.91 goals-against-average this season.
NSU has struggled at University Field in recent years, posting a 1-4 record since 2000. The Lions hold the edge on the series 7-3-1, beating the Sharks twice last season.
Last time out, the Sharks defeated Lynn University, 1-0, Tuesday, Oct. 26 at the NSU Soccer Complex. Hernandez tallied her 10th goal of the season, tying for fifth in the all-time NSU women’s soccer record book for goals in a single season.
In their last match, the Lions rolled past Florida Southern, 2-0, on Oct. 27 in Lakeland, Fla.
NSU posts a 1-2-1 record on the road this season, while Saint Leo tallies a 4-3-1 record on its home pitch for the year.
