Box Score
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Senior libero
Kathleen Yony (Miami, Fla.) recorded 15 digs to break the NSU all-time dig record of 1,698 set 14 years ago by Vanessa Gutierrez in 1996. Despite the achievement by Yony, the Nova Southeastern University volleyball team (8-17, 3-11 SSC) was winless against Rollins College (19-8, 8-6 SSC) in a 3-0 loss Saturday afternoon in the Arena at the Don Taft University Center.
The Sharks fell 25-21, 25-21 and 25-22 and was held to 36 kills and a .120 attack percentage. The team did out-dig the Tars by 10, 65-55.
Junior
Paola Ruiz (Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico) registered her 21st career double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs. Sophomore
Rachel Woodson (Rogers, Ark.) once again led NSU in kills as she recorded 11 in the match.
In the first set, junior
Anabely Escarpita (Boca Raton, Fla.) gave the Sharks an early 7-5 advantage killing a ball from
Jordan Pappas (So., Naperville, Ill.). After an NSU attack error to even the score, Ruiz evened the set back at 10 with one of her four kills in the set. Rollins fought back and took a four point lead at 17-13 before head coach Steve Wilcosky called a timeout.
Down by seven at 23-16, the Sharks rallied back scoring five straight points and even pulled within three on a
Molly Sigerich (Jr., Downers Grove, Ill.) service ace. The Tars took the first set by four, 25-21.
Despite hitting on .028 in the second set, the Sharks maintained control most of the frame. A service error by Rollins gave NSU a two point favor at 19-17. Three straight points by the Tars gave them a one point lead. Three back-to-back-to-back miscues from the Sharks put NSU down 2-0 in the match.
Rollins completed the sweep holding off the Sharks in the third set, 25-22. Woodson was the anchor of the NSU offense, getting six kills in the last frame. After Wilcosky broke Rollins momentum at 21-17, the Sharks pulled within one on two back-to-back kills from Sigerich and Escarpita and a Tars attack error. NSU was unable to rally back any further as the Sharks dropped its third straight conference match.
The Sharks will conclude its home portion of their schedule on Tuesday, Nov. 9th at 7 p.m. as NSU will host Barry University for senior night. Yony will be the lone Sharks senior acknowledged prior to the match.
