Volleyball Falls To Barry, 3-1

Sharks Stumble on Senior Night To The Buccaneers

Box Score

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team (8-18, 3-13 SSC) fell to Barry University (16-5, 11-4 SSC), 3-1, in the Arena at the Don Taft University Center on Tuesday evening.

The Buccaneers, who are receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll this week, worked back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat the Sharks in its last home match of the 2010 season.

Kathleen Yony (Miami, Fla.) was honored prior to the match being NSU's lone senior on the squad. Yony picked up 11 digs and one assist.

Redshirt junior Paola Ruiz (Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico) added a double-double in tonight's game with 12 kills and 12 digs. Juniors Molly Sigerich (Downers Grove, Ill.) and Anabely Escarpita (Boca Raton, Fla.) both contributed 11 and 12 kills, respectively.

The Sharks looked to upset the No. 2 team in the SSC conference as NSU turned heads in the first set, upsetting Barry 25-22. Nova Southeastern hit .255, holding the Bucs to .114.

Down early 2-0, the Sharks got some help from Danielle Graham (So., Cincinnati, Ohio), who put the first point on the board for NSU with a kill. Sigerich followed with back-to-back kills to give the Sharks an early lead.  Sophomore Rachel Woodson (Rogers, Ark.) started a 5-1 run for NSU before Barry called a timeout at 11-6. Five kills out of the break gave the Sharks an eight point lead before the Bucs used their second and final timeout.

Up by four at 24-20, Barry scored two straight points but that was all as NSU took the first set, 1-0.

Set two was dominated by the offense from both teams. Despite the Sharks hitting a .259, the Bucs were nearly unstoppable with a .474 attack percentage. NSU had four more kills than Barry, but seven errors for the Sharks ended up making the difference as NSU dropped set two, 25-17, and evened the match at one.

In the third, the Bucs had a late 19-15 advantage, but the Sharks were relentless and after an NSU timeout, scored four consecutive points to even the set at 19-19. Barry quickly reversed the run in their favor and finished with a 6-0 run and take a 2-1 lead.

Tied at 9-9 in the fourth set, Barry only allowed NSU to tally four more points in the set and the Bucs eventually won the frame, 25-13 and the match.

The Sharks will conclude the 2010 season on the road in Tampa as NSU looks to upset the No. 2 team in the nation on Friday at 7 p.m. against the Spartans.
