Miramar, Fla. (Mar. 14, 2010) - Nova Southeastern University's men's and women's track and field teams had a stellar day at the FAU/FIU Invitational held Saturday, Mar. 13 at the Ansin Sports Complex with both teams recording nine Top-3 finishes. Additionally, the women's team set four new records - including three in the field - while the men's team broke a pair of records on the track.
NSU's women broke records in the long jump, shot put, high jump and the 4x100-meter relay. Erin Zampell (So., Naples, Fla.) took first-place in the shot put with a program record-setting mark of 40'4" (12.29m). Zampell broke her own record of 39'5" (12.01m) that was set a year ago at the FAU Invitational.
Jasmine Wheeler (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Briana Dorsett (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) also broke their own school records in the high jump and long jump, respectively. Wheeler won the high jump with a school record mark of 5'3" (1.60m), which is two inches (0.05m) higher than her previous best set at last week's USF Open. Meanwhile, Dorsett tied for third in the long jump with a 16'8.75" (5.10m) leap, which was 1.75" (0.05m) further than the program record she registered at the ERAU Last Chance.
On the track, the 4x100-meter relay team of Johniqua Stafford (Fr., Fort Worth, Texas), Wheeler, Kyley Jorgensen (So., Wellington, Fla.) and Tiffany Richardson (Fr., Ocala, Fla.) clocked 47.91 and placed second, which was .39 faster than the previous record set at the USF Open.
The Shark women also placed in the Top-3 in four other events. In the field, Zampell won the javelin with a 110'9" (33.76m) throw, while Brittany Watson (Fr., Indian Harbour Beach, Fla.) was second with a 104'9" (31.92m) mark. Alexis Sands (Fr., Miami, Fla.) finished third in the discus with a personal-best 117'9" (35.90m) mark. On the track, Dorsett was third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.41. Wheeler was third in the 100 meters with a time of 12.36.
For the men, Carlyle Thompson (Jr., Nassau, Bahamas) broke his own record in the 400 meters. Thompson, who was top collegiate finisher in the event and placed second overall, recorded a time of 48.42. The previous 400-meter record was 49.40 set at the USF Open.
The men's 4x400-meter relay concluded the day's competition by setting a new NSU record as well. The relay team of Jonathan Gil (Fr., Port Saint Lucie, Fla.), Zak Bagby (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.), Chris Jacob (Jr., Naples, Fla.) and Thompson ran 3:25.15, placing third and breaking the previous program record of 3:25.68 that was set at last year's USF Open.
The men's team also had first-place finishes in three events. Edikan Nkan (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) won the shot put with a 40'1.25" (12.22m) mark. Mike Greiner (Fr., Palm Coast, Fla.) took first in the pole vault by clearing 11'5.75" (3.50m). Joe Peña (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) had the Sharks' only win on the track by recording a race-winning time of 9:11.78 in the 3,000 meters.
NSU also had top-3 finishes in one field event and two track event. Ryan Dvorak (Fr., Wall, N.J.) placed second in the javelin with a 161'6" (49.23m) throw, while John Crute (Sr., Miami, Fla.) was right behind in third with a 138'8" (42.27m) mark. Greiner finished second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 18.38. Meanwhile, Brendan Chwalek (Fr., Sellersburg, Ind.) took third in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:12.61.
NSU is back in action with the two-day Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables. The meet begins on Friday at 2 p.m. with field events.
