Box Score

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern men’s soccer team defeated the Florida Memorial Lions, 3-0 Friday night in its 2010 home opener. Aly Hassan (Sr., Weston, Fla.) scored his fourth goal while Darryl Gordon (Sr., Miami, Fla.) and Stian Roa (Fr., Oslo, Norway) each scored their first goal of the season.

The atmosphere was fitting for a Shark home opener as the Blue Legion could be heard throughout campus. It did not take long for the Sharks (2-0-1) to strike as Hassan scored his 30th career goal in the sixth minute. Hassan received a pass from Brian Cardozo (Sr., Davie, Fla.) and scored 15 yards in front of the goal through traffic. The Sharks would hold their 1-0 lead against the Lions (3-2-0) into halftime.

12 minutes into the second period Gordon chipped in NSU’s second goal of the game with help from Roa and Shane Coore (Jr., Kingston, Jamaica). The match was paused shortly after Gordon’s goal due to an unfortunate Lion injury. After a long break, both teams retook the field with the home team up by two scores.

Roa scored his first career goal in the 60th minute and all but crushed the Lions’ hopes of salvaging the match. Hassan earned his first assist of the season on the goal. The Sharks would not take another shot on goal but the defense held its ground for the remainder of the match

Although they went scoreless, FMU made the Sharks work harder on defense then they have all season. The Lions took 18 shots, 7 of which were on goal, more than any NSU has faced in 2010. Lyle Howe (So., Coral Springs, Fla.) recorded a season-high seven saves and earned his second victory of the season.

It was a very heated match as 10 yellow cards were handed out, nine of which came in the second half. Three players were booked with red cards, two of which were Sharks.

The NSU men’s soccer team will return to the NSU Soccer Complex this Tuesday to face St. Thomas at 7 pm.
