FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Nova Southeastern men’s soccer team (2-0-2) drew with the St. Thomas Bobcats (1-3-1), 0-0 Tuesday night at the NSU Soccer Complex.
Despite not scoring a goal, Stian Roa (Fr., Oslo, Norway) had a solid performance. Two of his three shots were on goal and he set up several opportunities in the flow of play and off corner kicks. Simon Nett (Fr., Grimstad, Norway) was the only other Shark to take multiple shots on goal.
The Shark offense was minimal in the first half with only four shots attempted. The Bobcats matched that total, making it the first time this season that NSU did not outshoot the opposition in the first half. Nevertheless, the Sharks kept their opponents scoreless in the flow of the game for the fifth straight half this season.
The Sharks turned up the pressure in the second half and had two great opportunities in the 61st minute. Lorenzo Migliavaca (Sr., Varese, Italy), playing off the goalkeeper position for the first time in his career, received a pass from Roa and shot a rocket that barely hit the goalkeeper’s hand in the top left corner.
On the next play, Nett attempted a header off of a corner kick but the keeper made another miraculous save. In the 73rd minute, Migliavacca went one-on-one with the goalkeeper but shot the ball just wide of the goal.
The Bobcats also had opportunities late in the second half, as Mike Nije had a wide open shot at the net in the 83rd minute but missed high. Both teams had multiple chances to score in the final five minutes of regulation but neither converted.
Neither team dominated the ball in either overtime period as the final 20 minutes did not match the drama of the second half. The Sharks’ best opportunity to score a golden goal came in the 106th minute when Craig Heenighan (Sr., Widnes, England) had a free kick 25 yards away from the goal but NSU did not deliver.
The Sharks were outshot for the first time all season, 21-16. Lyle Howe (So., Coral Springs, Fla.) made a season-high nine saves to take his record to 2-0-2.
The NSU men’s soccer team will begin Sunshine State Conference play this Saturday, Sept. 18 against Barry at 7:00 pm.
