FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women’s soccer team (7-2-2, 1-1-2 SSC) will head up to Boca Raton, Fla. this Tuesday to face Lynn (7-3-1, 2-2-0 SSC) in an afternoon match at 1 p.m.
The Sharks are coming off one of their most high profile matches of the season as they battled to a scoreless draw last week against No. 6 Saint Leo. Despite neither team scoring, the Sharks did not appear to be the unranked team between the two as they had several chances to score. NSU went on to outshoot the Lions, 17-6, while both teams recorded only four shots on goal. The tie was the first blemish on Saint Leo’s record this season as they entered the match with a 10-0-0 record.
Regardless of who looked better in the match, neither team took three points out of it. This is disappointing for the Sharks as, despite their solid overall record, NSU is on the outside looking in to the Sunshine State Conference tournament as of today. The Sharks’ 1-1-2 record gives them five points, putting them in seventh place behind Barry, Lynn and Florida Tech who all have six. On the other hand, the Sharks are one victory away from being in the driver’s seat for a home match in the first round of the SSC tournament.
The SSC is clearly any team’s conference in 2011, making every one of the Sharks’ four remaining conference matches important. A victory will mean a great deal for both NSU and Lynn as the winner will move into third or fifth place heading into next weekend’s matches. The loser will be left on the outside of the postseason picture with three matches remaining in-conference.
Although the Sharks are 7-11-1 all-time against Lynn, since joining the SSC the Sharks have had the Fighting Knights’ number. Since 2004, the Sharks are 7-3-1 against Lynn. Last season, the Sharks hosted the Fighting Knights and defeated them, 1-0. The match, which was held on senior night, went down to the wire as former Shark
Alexis Hernandez scored the game-winner with less than two minutes remaining.
Heading into Tuesday, Lynn has struggled offensively as they are 1-2-0 with one goal scored in the last three matches. However, their two losses came against the top-two teams in the conference in Saint Leo and No. 10 Rollins. On the season, Melissa Ortiz has been the team’s go-to offensive threat with eight goals on the season, twice as many as any of her teammates.
