FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s soccer team will compete in what might be their toughest home match of the season Wednesday night as the Sharks host No. 4 Rollins at 7 p.m. The Tars will be the highest ranked team the Sharks have played at the NSU Soccer Complex in nearly three seasons.
The Sharks enter the match after going winless last week in matches against Eckerd and Christian Brothers. Each match ended in heartbreak as the Sharks were tied in both matches late, but gave up goals within the final 15 minutes. The Sharks lost both matches, 2-1.
With the season winding down and only three Sunshine State Conference games left, NSU is now in a position to make one last push for a spot in the SSC tournament. After facing the Tars Wednesday, the Sharks will travel to Florida Tech on Saturday, Oct. 15 and face Tampa at home on Saturday, Oct. 22. The Sharks will need to win at least two out of three matches in order to contend for a spot in the tournament.
Rollins, a traditional power in the SSC, has had the Sharks’ number over the years as NSU is 4-8-0 all-time against the Tars. However, the Sharks have always played Rollins tough as two of the last three losses came in overtime.
Last year, Rollins hosted NSU and defeated the Sharks, 3-1. The match was a close battle as it was tied, 1-1, heading into the final ten minutes.
Matthew Ilter (So., Lake Mary, Fla.) scored his first collegiate goal at the 20 minute mark before Rollins tied it up 10 minutes later. In the 80th minute, Rollins scored on a header on a free kick to take the lead. They padded their victory with a penalty kick with just four minutes remaining.
In order for NSU to post multiple goals against Rollins, they’ll have to get through one of the nation’s top goalkeepers in Keneil Baker. Baker ranks third in the nation in goals against average as he’s allowed only 0.43 goals per game this season. Strikers
Halil Tozar (Fr., Berlin, Germany) and
Tyree Clarke (Fr., Birmingham, England) will need to be on top of their game if they plan on putting up numbers against Baker.
