BOX SCORE

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern men’s soccer team (4-10-1, 1-7-0 SSC) dropped its final Sunshine State Conference match of the season against the Tampa Spartans (3-9-2, 3-3-0 SSC), 2-1.

Simon Nett (So., Grimstad, Norway) scored his first career goal in the 59th minute, bringing the Sharks within a goal of Tampa for the remainder of the match. Seniors Alvin Quaye (West Ham, England) and Juan Rivera (Miami, Fla.), who were both honored prior to the match during senior night festivities, each recorded an assist on the score.

Prior to their only goal, the Sharks came out of the gate slow as Tampa commanded the action in the first half. Tampa recorded nine shots, with five on goal, while NSU only had five shots before the break. The Spartans put themselves on top when Dominic Cutrofello scored directly in front of the goal in the 40th minute.

The lead grew shortly after the break as Phillip Klaus (Fr., Lippstad, Germany) was given his fifth yellow card just inside the box in the 54th minute. Tampa’s Ryan Griffin chipped in the penalty shot to score the game-winner. Along with Andrea Spuntarelli (Fr., Rome, Italy), who received a yellow card late in the match, Klaus will be unavailable for the Sharks’ final match of the season.

Down by two, the Sharks quickly cut the lead in half when Nett scored on a header in the box. Rivera took a corner kick from the right side and put the ball off Quaye and right to Nett for the quick score. The score marked the second time in two matches the Sharks scored with a header on a corner kick.

NSU dominated the time of possession down the stretch and had several chances to tie the match. The Sharks almost sent the match into overtime in the final 30 seconds as Halil Tozar (Fr., Berlin, Germany) took a shot off the post and barely into the hands of goalkeeper David Niepel who made a heads up play. Andrea Giombetti (Fr., Rome, Italy) started in goal for the Sharks and made seven saves.

The Sharks will conclude the season on the road Wednesday, Oct. 25 against Palm Beach Atlantic at 3 p.m. in West Palm Beach, Fla.
