FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern volleyball team (6-17, 2-9 SSC) picked up its second win in three matches, knocking off fellow Sunshine State Conference member Barry, 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-22), Tuesday at the NSU Arena.
The Bucs picked up the first point of the opening set, but it would be their only lead.
Danielle Graham (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) tallied three kills and a service ace to put the Sharks up 6-3.
Anabely Escarpita (Sr., Boca Raton, Fla.) and
Molly Sigerich (Sr., Downers Grove, Ill.) followed with kills of their own and
Jordan Pappas (Jr., Naperville, Ill.) contributed a service ace to give the Sharks a four-point edge, 9-5.
Barry closed the gap to two, 10-8, after a Mariana Lisboa kill, but Graham went back on the attack, ripping three more kills to push the Sharks lead back to five, 14-9. The Bucs continued to fight and eventually tied the set at 19-19 before
Samantha High (So., Naples, Fla.) recorded her second kill of the set to put NSU back on top.
Graham added two more kills and the Sharks captured the first set, 25-21. The junior finished the set with nine kills, while attacking at a .562 clip. As a team, the Sharks registered a .412 hitting percentage in the opener.
The Sharks offense continued its momentum into the second set as Graham tallied three more kills, while Sigerich and
Lauren Lewkowicz (Fr., Coral Springs, Fla.) each added one to give NSU a 7-5 advantage. The Bucs rallied to go up by one, 11-10, but Graham once again put the Sharks back in the lead, picking up a kill and service ace to swing the match back into NSU’s favor.
Escarpita kept things going for the Sharks with a solo block and Sigerich picked up a pair of blocking assists with the help of Pappas on the first and Lewkowicz on second. A kill from High and a service ace from Escarpita gave NSU a 19-14 lead and brought a timeout from the Barry bench.
Out of the break, Escarpita scored another service ace and kill on consecutive points, allowing the Sharks to cruise to a 25-19 set victory.
In the third set, the Bucs opened up an early 4-1 advantage, but Graham added two kills to her increasing total and Lewkowicz added another to even the score, 4-4.
Paige Boivin (Jr., Plainfield, Ill.) got in on the action, recording a service ace that created a four-point Sharks lead, 9-5.
Destiny Bannister (Fr., Homestead, Fla.) and Graham teamed up for a block to keep the NSU lead at four, 16-12, but the Bucs showed some resiliency and with three consecutive kills and a block by Lanie Muys, Barry took the lead, 17-16.
The lead was short-lived for Barry, as the Bucs committed four straight errors and Graham tagged another kill to put NSU back ahead, 20-19. Escarpita secured the set for the Sharks with a pair of kills and the Sharks wrapped up the sweep with a 25-22 set win.
Graham led all attackers with 19 kills with a .370 hitting mark. Tania Torres recorded 10 to lead the Bucs attack. Pappas picked up a match-high 28 assists to go with eight digs for NSU. As a team, the Sharks racked up eight blocks as seven NSU student-athletes recorded at least one blocking assist.
