Women’s Soccer Faces-Off Against No. 6 Saint Leo at the NSU Soccer Complex

The Sharks are 1-0 against top-25 ranked opponents in 2011.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern women’s soccer team (7-2-1, 1-1-1 SSC) will play its second top-25 nationally ranked opponent of the season when it faces No. 6 Saint Leo (10-0-0, 3-0-0), at 5 p.m., Tues., Oct. 4, at the NSU Soccer Complex.

In its previous match against a ranked opponent, the Sharks defeated No. 19 West Florida, 2-1, Sept. 4 at the NSU Soccer Complex. Dilja Olafsdottir (So., Reykjavik, Iceland) and Briana Hanly (So., Bethpage, N.Y.) each scored a goal for the Sharks.

Both teams enter the matchup having won their previous Sunshine State Conference game. The Sharks defeated Eckerd, 3-0, getting goals from Kelsey McCusker (Fr., Stone Harbor, N.J.), Malin Broberg (So., Stockholm, Sweden), and Rachael Reid (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind.).  It marked the seventh game multiple Sharks scored a goal.

Fifteen different Sharks have found the net this season with Broberg topping the category totaling seven goals. The Sharks have scored 35 goals for the season, a 3.5 goals per game average.

Reid has racked up the most assists, totaling six of the team’s 35 assists. 

The Sharks have been tough on defense, preventing opportunities for opponents to take shots, allowing just 9.6 shots per game for 1.4 goals per game. Michelle Fuerst (Jr., Armonk, N.Y.) (3-2-1) has helped direct the Sharks defense from goal, recording two shutout performances, making 18 saves and allowing one goal per game.

Saint Leo defeated Lynn, 1-0, in their previous match thanks to goalkeeper Laura Carstens’ (7-0-0) second shutout of the season and Jaime Smith’s first goal of the season.

The Lions have scored 36 goals on the season with 12 of those goals coming in three away-from-home contests. Dari Alcantara and Pia Soesemann have contributed the most to Saint Leo’s goals total with eight each.
  
In 2010, the Sharks fell to the Lions, 4-0. Soesemann scored three goals and assisted on another for the Lions. The Sharks are 3-8-1 all-time against Saint Leo.
