FINAL RESULTS
PRELIMINARY RESULTS
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Nova Southeastern swimming and diving teams wrapped up day one of the second annual Shark Invitational Friday at the NSU Aquatic Center. After one day of competition, both the men’s and women’s teams are in second place behind the Tampa Spartans.
The No. 9 men’s team has 262 points, 30.5 points behind the No. 11 Spartans, while the No. 14 women’s team has 275 points, 67 behind No. 9 Tampa.
The preliminary rounds began at 10 a.m. as seven teams competed for spots in the evening’s finals session. The preliminary rounds were highlighted by
Ewa Jamborska (Sr., Katowice, Poland) and
Lauren Chapple (Fr., London, England) who each qualified for the 200-yard IM final. Jamborska’s time of 2:08.45 and Chapple’s time of 2:08.07 were both NCAA B-cut qualifying times. On the men’s side,
Jonas Grundstrom (Sr., Fagersta, Sweden) was the lone Shark to qualify for the final in the 200-IM.
In the women’s 50-yard freestyle,
Emma Lawrenz (Fr., Minnetonka, Minn.) was the squad’s only finals qualifier. She clocked in at a time of 24.39, provisionally qualifying her for the NCAA National Championship. The men’s side was much different as
Ash Dougan (Sr., Tewkesbury Glouchestershire, England),
Esau Simpson (So., St. David’s, Grenada),
Armin Hornikel (Sr., Goose Creek, S.C.) and
William Bunge (Sr., Springfield, Mo.) made up nearly half the total finalists. Simpson’s preliminary time of 21.31 was a B-cut qualifying time.
The Sharks started off the finals with an explosive performance by
Erin Black (Jr., Fort Myers, Fla.). Black destroyed the Shark Invitational record in the 1000-yard freestyle and blew by her own program record with a time of 10:07.42. Black was four tenths of a second away from automatically qualifying for nationals.
Grundstrom and
Oskar Nordstrand (Jr., Stockholm, Sweden) claimed second and third place, respectively, in the men’s 1000-freestyle and each picked up B-cut qualifying times. Grundstrom clocked in at 9:28.58 and Nordstrand finished in 9:30.85.
The Sharks had three swimmers in the women’s 200-IM final but could not place in the top-three, allowing Tampa to build their lead by claiming 75 points. Tampa also had a strong showing on the men’s side, claiming two swimmers in the top-three and bringing in 90 points.
Oscar Aldabe (So., Alicante, Spain) won the consolation final with a time of 1:56.71. In the men’s 50-freestyle, Simpson led all Sharks in fifth place while Hornikel improved on his preliminary race with a NCAA B-cut time of 21.34.
The women ended their day on a high note as they claimed second in the 200-yard medley relay. Their time of 1:47.51 was three tenths of a second behind Florida Southern but still strong enough to provisionally qualify the team for nationals. The men finished the day by placing in sixth place in the 200-medley relay, finishing in 1:35.8.
The Shark Invitational will continue Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the NSU Aquatic Center. Events scheduled include the 400-yard IM, the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard freestyle.
