Women’s Soccer to Begin Conference Schedule against Florida Southern Wednesday

Sharks will seek to avenge its 2010 loss to the Mocs.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern women’s soccer team (5-1-0, 0-0-0 SSC) will host Florida Southern (4-2-0, 1-0 SSC) at the NSU Soccer Complex for its Sunshine State Conference opener on Wed., Sept. 21, at 6:00 p.m.

Currently in first-place in the SSC, Florida Southern enters the match against the Sharks on a four-game win streak, which includes a 3-0 win over conference foe Eckerd and a 3-0 win over West Florida.

The Sharks suffered its first loss of the season to Columbus St., 5-2, ending a four-game win streak to start the season, which included a 2-1 win over then No. 19 West Florida. The Sharks rebounded from its first loss to give Coker a 6-0 drubbing two days later. As a result of the loss, the Sharks fell out of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America top-25 Sept. 20, but they did receive votes in the poll. 

The Sharks, 7-4-1 all-time against Florida Southern will seek to avenge its 5-0 loss to the then No. 15 Mocs, one of two conference losses for the Sharks a season ago. Twelve players return from that team for Florida Southern, which made a NCAA South Region appearance and finished the season 10-5-4 and 5-3 in the SSC.

The Sharks return 16 players from 2010, including team leader in points Malin Broberg (So., Stockholm, Sweden). She currently has 13 points from five goals and three assists, ranking her 27th in the nation for points-per-game.

Broberg leads a balanced, highly-productive offensive attack for the Sharks which averages 4.5 goals-per-game, fifth-best in the country, and features five more players with two goals or more. The five players include; Shanoska Young (Sr., Kingston, Jamaica) (4), Sarah Wareham (Sr., Davie, Fla.) (3), Dilja Olafsdottir (So., Reykjavik, Iceland) (2), Melissa Madden (Fr., Vero Beach, Fla.) (2), and Sierra Lelii (Fr., Seminole, Fla.) (2).

Four Mocs have two goals on the season thus far, with Kara Moore leading the team in points totaling two goals and two assists for six points.

Michelle Fuerst (Jr., Armonk, N.Y.) (1-1-0) started her first game of the season for the Sharks in the win against Coker recording a shutout and a save, in 90-minutes. Martina Tangen (4-2-0) has started all six games of the season for Florida Southern allowing six goals and making 31 saves in 493:21 minutes in goal.
