FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s soccer team (6-5-1, 2-3-1 SSC) took its first draw of the season Saturday, as the Sharks played to a 1-1 ending against the Barry Buccaneers ((3-8-1, 0-5-1 SSC) at the NSU Soccer Complex.
Both goals came within a minute of each other in the first half. The Bucs scored first, with their goal coming in the 22nd minute. Barry sent a ball into the box from near midfield that found Connor Randal, who slid the ball into the goal for his fourth score of the season.
NSU trailed for just over a minute before
Riccardo Bini (Fr., Varese, Italy) scored his team-best seventh goal of the season. The goal came on a bang-bang play in the box, with Bini barely getting a touch on the ball. Barry attempted to clear out Bini’s shot, but the defender could not send it up field before it crossed the goal line. Bini now moves into a tie for the Sunshine State Conference-lead in total goals.
The Sharks were the more offensive minded team in both halves. They outshot the Bucs, 10-2, in the first half and again in the second half, 10-3.
The overtime periods were much more even, with neither team getting more than two shots off in either overtime session. However, neither the Sharks nor Bucs seriously threatened in either period, as the two teams each earned their first draws of the season.
The match put another notch in the South Florida rivalry, as the squads played a heated contest. Nine yellow cards were issued to nine players, with six being issued to Barry.
The Sharks will be back on the road this week to face the Tampa Spartans in Tampa, Fla. on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
