TAMPA, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s soccer team (6-6-1, 2-4-1 SSC) dropped a Sunshine State Conference road match Wednesday, falling to the Tampa Spartans (8-4-1, 5-2-0 SSC), 2-1.
NSU lead for the majority of the match, after taking the lead early with a goal in the 21st minute. The Sharks’ patience payed off on a free kick, as
Stefano Fanfoni (Fr., Cremona, Italy) played the ball slightly back towards
Nicola Brivio (Fr., Gallarte, Italy). Brivio darted up the left side of the field and sent a great cross into the box for
Riccardo Bini (Fr., Varese, Italy), who scored immediately.
The goal was the eighth of the season by Bini, who is currently tied for the lead in total goals scored in the Sunshine State Conference. It also marked the second straight match in which Brivio connected with Bini for a goal.
The rest of the first half was played mostly in the Sharks’ territory, as Tampa amped up their offense. Despite facing heat from the home team, the defense stood strong and did not allow a shot-on-goal for the remainder of the first half.
The Sharks held onto their lead for the majority of the second half, limiting Tampa to one shot-on-target over a 30-minute stretch. The Tampa pressure eventually paid off for the home team, when Tampa’s Samoda Johnson scored the equalizer on a cross into the box in the 75th minute.
The Sharks moved back into a more offensive minded set, but had trouble finding the target down the stretch. The Spartans hit the game-winner in the 83rd minute on a Tyler Blackwood goal from in front of the right post.
Goalkeeper
Andrea Giombetti (So., Rome, Italy) finished the match with four saves.
The Sharks will return to the NSU Soccer Complex for their final home match of the season Saturday, as they face Rollins at 7:30 p.m.
