Volleyball Falls to Eckerd in Three Straight

Sharks lose the first of two matches this weekend.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Nova Southeastern women’s volleyball t
eam (4-14, 1-4 SSC) fell short to the Eckerd Tritons (10-6, 4-1 SSC) on Friday night at the NSU Arena at the Don Taft University Center in three straight sets.

Offensively, 
Dana Holger (Fr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) and Sydney Cook (Fr., Miami, Fla.) led the Sharks, combining for 19 kills, 11 and 8, respectively. Kelly McMahon (Sr., Madison, Wis.), who stepped in as an emergency setter, added 26 helpers to the team's offense while Paige Boivin (Sr., Plainfield Ill.) led defensively with 13 digs.

In the first set, the Sharks fell behind early by four and scrapped point-for-point with the Tritons but were unable to muster a comeback.  The Sharks fell as far as seven points behind but also came within three late in the set to make the score 22-19. NSU gave up the remaining three points, falling short in the first set 25-19. The Tritons defense was on point, registering 19 digs in the first set.

In the second set, NSU came out strong in an attempt to gain momentum, trading points to a seven-all tie until the Tritons slowly created a separation. NSU battled back, evening the score at 20 late in the match but were unable to power through.  The Sharks scored one of the remaining six points in the set to fall 25-21 and two games behind in the match.

In the third set, the Sharks spilt the first two points with the Tritons but were unable to catch them the remainder of the set. It proved to be all Eckerd in the third, hitting at .441 percent with an impressive 23 digs and 21 total team points. The Sharks hung around midway through the match but were unable to generate any offense, resulting in a 25-15 loss.

The Sharks are back in action tomorrow Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Don Taft University Center when they take on the nationally ranked Tampa Spartans (12-2, 5-0 SSC). The match is set to start at 4 p.m.
