FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern men’s basketball team (1-0) started off the season on a strong note, as the Sharks defeated South Florida rival St. Thomas, 90-78, Thursday at the NSU Arena in the Don Taft University Center.

The Sharks played a close first half, leading by only a point at halftime. However, the Sharks outscored St. Thomas by double-digits in the second period, 52-41. In the game, the Sharks shot a crisp 53 percent from the floor (28-for-53) and 40 percent from 3-point range (10-for-25). The Bobcats shot well, but were hindered by 11 missed free throw shots.

Jacob Reed (Jr., Perth, Australia) led all scorers with 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the floor. Iran Hollis (Sr., Hollywood, Fla.) and Justin Jeangerard (So., Weaverville, Calif.) each totaled seven rebounds and 13 points.

The first half featured back and forth action, with the Sharks pulling away at one point by 13, at 33-20. With five minutes left before the break, St. Thomas began to hit its stride and went on a 17-5 run to finish the half. Reed had a game-high 13 points in the opening half. The Bobcats were led by DeMonte Simpson, who had 11 first half points.

The Sharks made great adjustments after the break and took Simpson out of the game, as the bruising forward only scored two points in the final 20 minutes. Just over seven minutes into the period, the Sharks reestablished their lead at 54-34. With 5:53 left, the Sharks took their largest lead at 78-58. The Bobcats kept pushing, cutting the deficit down to as low as six points, but did not have enough time to complete a comeback.

Sean Mullan (Sr., Mangerton, Australia) followed Reed in the scoring column with 14 points on 3-for-5 shooting. Brian Cahill (So., Arlington, Va.) collected team-highs with eight rebounds and three assists. Cahill matched Stian Berg's (So., Baerum, Norway) point total of eight. Berg also had three dimes on the night.

The Sharks will return next weekend, when they host the Thanksgiving Classic, beginning Friday, Nov. 23 when NSU faces Goldey-Beacom at 5:30 p.m.
