Volleyball Season Ends in Four-Set Loss to Mocs

Last Match for Boivin, Lopez, McMahon, Pappas and Woodson

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern volleyball season (4-28, 1-15 SSC) ended with a loss to Florida Southern (21-11, 11-5 SSC) Saturday evening at the NSU Arena in the Don Taft University Center, 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 20-25, 25-17).

Sydney Cook (Fr., Miami) led the Sharks with 16 kills, while freshman Dana Holger (Lino Lakes, Minn.) had 14. In her final match, senior Jordan Pappas (Naperville, Ill.) had a game-high 42 assists, while fellow senior Paige Boivin (Plainfield, Ill.) led all players with 26 digs. Also in double digits in digs were Sarah Shifflett (So., Boynton Beach, Fla.) with 13 and senior Kelly McMahon (Madison, Wisc.) with 12.

Along with Pappas, Boivin and McMahon, Julia Lopez (Jr., El Paso, Tex.) and Rachel Woodson (Sr,. Rogers, Ark.) each had their final on-court performances for NSU. Woodson had six kills and two block assists, while Lopez had three kills and a block assist.

In the first set, neither team took more than a three-point advantage until it was Florida Southern with a 22-18 lead. They had set point at 24-19, but the Sharks battled back with three straight points with Holger serving. A Gabby Fernandez kill ended it at 25-22.

The second frame was very similar, though the Mocs did take a 4-0 lead to start. The Sharks battled back to tie it at 9-9, and it stayed close until 19-15, Florida Southern. NSU cut it to two at 20-18, but the Mocs closed out the set on a 5-1 run to move ahead by two sets, 25-19.

Following the break, momentum swung NSU’s way as they only trailed twice, 1-0 and 7-6. Cook had five kills, and Holger and Tory Njardvik (Fr,. Livingston, Mont.) three each to keep the match alive.

In the fourth and final set, the Mocs broke things open with a mid-set 7-3 run to go ahead 13-9. They led the rest of the way by at least three points and won the match with a 25-17 decision.

Anne Pietkiewicz had a double-double for the winners with a team-high 13 kills while adding 16 digs.
