MELBOURNE, Fla. – On day two of Florida Tech’s CarMax Holiday Classic, the Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team placed four players in double digits in turning away Palm Beach Atlantic, 78-51.
The Sharks (8-3) shot 57 percent from the field, going 29-of-51, and were nearly as good from long range, at 54 percent (14-of-26). Five players made multiple 3-pointers, led by Taylor Buie (Fr., Puyallup, Wash.), who was 4-for-6 among her 14 points. Amanda Burakoski (Jr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) had a team-high 15 points and made 3-of-5 from behind the arc.
Tailor Jones (Sr., Altamonte Springs, Fla.) was 5-of-7 from the field and had 12 points, her highest scoring output since Nov. 17, and Meixandra Porter (Sr., Chantilly, Va.) had three made 3-pointers among her 11 points. Chipping in with two 3-pointers each were Jessica Russi (Jr., Lake Mary, Fla.) and Danielle Robinson (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). Russi added eight assists, three more than the entire Palm Beach Atlantic team (it was a 23-5 overall advantage for NSU).
The game was close for much of the first half. Six straight points by PBA made it a two-point game at 19-17 at the 6:39 mark, but a 16-5 run to end the half, capped by a Burakoski jumper with seven seconds remaining, gave the Sharks their biggest lead (at that point) at 35-22.
Coming out of the break, a basket by Richelle Carach (Jr., Naples, Fla.) followed by a Burakoski 3-pointer gave NSU the first five points of the second half, and the closest it would be from there on out was 13 points on two occasions. The lead ballooned out to as much as 29, with the final margin of 27.
The Sailfish (3-8) were led by Lynsey Poole’s game-high 20 points. Their leading scorer coming in, Ashley Dolberry, had 13, but was only 2-of-8 from the field.
NSU will have Sunshine State Conference play from here on out, beginning next Saturday, Jan. 5, when they travel to Eckerd.
