FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s soccer team (1-0-0) started the year off with fireworks, as the Sharks defeated the Ave Maria Gyrenes (0-1-0), 4-0, Thursday at the NSU Soccer Complex.
NSU’s four-goal performance set the school record for most goals scored in a season debut. It was also the Sharks’ ninth shutout in a season-opener.
Shark fans and alumni witnessed the debut of several new Sharks, with 11 of 18 newcomers making appearances. All four of NSU’s goals came from newcomers, as
Sharif Shears (Fr., Davie, Fla.),
Riccardo Bini (Fr., Varese, Italy),
Juan Rodriguez (Fr., Lima, Peru) and
Maurice Padula (Fr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) all scored in their debut.
The first score came in the 26th minute, as Rodriguez scored the game-winning goal on a shot inside the box. Sophomore
David Robles (Miami, Fla.) earned the first assist of the season for NSU.
The second goal of the game came 10 minutes later, as the Sharks scored off of a corner kick delivered by
Andrea Spuntarelli (So., Rome, Italy).
Matthias Bruno (Fr., Rome, Italy) had the first touch on the ball before newcoming striker Bini scored the first goal of his career.
Shears took a team-high four shots in the game and converted on his first goal right after the start of the second half. In the 50th minute, Shears received a pass from
Karl Enarsson (Fr., Gothenburg, Sweden) and sent the ball into the back of the net.
Just before the 54th minute, Maurice Padula entered the game and went on to score on his very first collegiate touch.
Mattia Marzetti (Fr., Rome, Italy) took a shot from the right side of the box that bounced off the goalkeepers hands. Maurice Padula received the ball on the left side and immediately sent it in for a goal.
Overall, the Sharks recorded 19 shots, with nine of them coming on goal.
Andrea Giombetti (So., Rome, Italy) had a quiet night, turning in two saves in the shutout.
The Sharks will return to the pitch to face Carson-Newman Saturday, Sept. 1 at the NSU Soccer Complex.
