FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s and women’s soccer teams will play against Sunshine State Conference foes for the first time this season, as the Sharks play doubleheaders against Florida Tech and Florida Southern this week. All games will be played at the NSU Soccer Complex.
On Wednesday, the women’s soccer team will face off against the Florida Southern Mocs at 5 p.m., with the men’s game immediately following. Both matches are listed as nonconference matches. On Saturday, the men’s team will play the Florida Tech Panthers at 5 p.m., with the women playing in the prime-time slot. The FIT matchup will be the first match for each team that will count towards their SSC records.
The women’s soccer team enters the week with a 1-1 record in this past weekend’s Bobcat Shootout. The Sharks started off the year with a 1-0 overtime victory over host-school Georgia College and State. NSU junior
Malin Broberg (Stockholm, Sweden) scored the game-winning goal in the second minute of overtime. The Sharks ended the weekend in a 3-0 loss to Tusculum, a strong side that also upset nationally-ranked Saint Leo.
Historically, the women have the upper hand against both of their opponents this week. Against FSC, the Sharks are 7-5-3 all time. However, they have been on a skid against the Mocs as of late, with their last victory coming in 2006. Against FIT, the Sharks are 9-4-1 all time. The SSC-opener will serve as a revenge match, as the Sharks were knocked out of the playoffs last season by the Panthers.
The men enter this week with history on their mind. If the Sharks can pull off the shutout against Florida Southern, it would be their program-best fourth-straight shutout to start the year. NSU is currently 3-0 with three shutouts against Ave Maria, Carson-Newman and St. Thomas. However, the Sharks are in a deep group as one of five SSC teams to start the year undefeated. The group includes FIT, which enters the week at 3-0.
The Sharks have had FSC’s number in the all time series, with a record of 14-5-1. The Sharks’ win over FSC in 2011 was their lone conference win. The men have not had as much fortune against FIT, with an 8-12-2 all time record. The Sharks’ last victory over FIT in conference play came in 2007.
