FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern men’s soccer team (3-1-0) took its first loss of the season Wednesday, as the Sharks were upset against the Florida Southern Mocs (1-3-1), 1-0, at the NSU Soccer Complex.

NSU was taken down despite a lopsided box score, as the Sharks took 24 shots in the contest, the most in a 90-minute match since the 2009 season. However, the Sharks could not find the goal, with only seven shots on target. The Sharks also took 12 corner kicks, tying for the program’s largest mark since the 2007 season. In comparison, Florida Southern finished the match with five total shots and two corner kicks taken.

Despite this, the defining play of the match came in the 71st minute, as Florida Southern scored the only goal of the match. The Mocs’ Jocaughn Howard received a through ball after a free kick and blew past his defender. Going one-on-one with NSU’s goalkeeper Andrea Giombetti (So., Rome, Italy), Howard slipped the ball in for the game-winner.

After going a whole first half without registering a shot, the Mocs’ goal came on their fifth and final shot attempt of the match. Over the final 19 minutes of the match, the Sharks took several shots and had opportunities to score on multiple corner kicks. However, accuracy still plagued the Sharks, as the home team did not register a shot-on-goal in the final 38 minutes of the match.

Overall, Riccardo Bini (Fr., Varese, Italy) led the team with six shot attempts, while Andrea Spuntarelli (So., Rome, Italy) trailed him with four. However, defender Nicola Brivio (Fr., Gallarte, Italy) led the team in shots-on-goal with two.

The Sharks will look to rebound on Saturday, Sept. 15 when the Sharks open Sunshine State Conference play against Florida Tech at the NSU Soccer Complex at 5 p.m.
