FORT LAUDERADLE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern volleyball team looks to build off momentum from their first conference win of the season when they take on another Sunshine State school, Saint Leo, at the NSU Arena Saturday at 4 p.m.
The Sharks (5-13, 1-6 SSC) not only topped rival Lynn Tuesday, but did so in straight-set fashion, 25-22, 25-19, 25-21.
Sydney Cook (So., Miami) paced all players with 13 kills and did it at a .346 clip. The team didn't trail the Fighting Knights in either the first or third set, and committed four less hitting errors than their opponent.
The win gives the Sharks two victories in their last four matches. Meanwhile, Saint Leo (16-6, 4-2 SSC) has won six of their last seven, heading into Friday's match at Lynn. Currently, they sit alone in third place in the conference pending the result with Lynn.
The Lions have two league leaders in Alexa Griffith and Jaclyn Mailoto. Griffith's hitting percentage is .396, .036 higher than anyone else in the SSC. Four of her teammates – Hope Lemon, Meghan Donovan, Jillian Stolzenburg and Tawni Warren – rank among the top 20 in the conference in this category. Mailoto, the team's primary setter, tops all players in assists with 11.67 per set.
The Sharks were one of six teams to have a mid-week contest with their Tuesday match against Lynn. Their individuals mostly stayed where they were among the league leaders.
Cook is still fifth in the SSC in kills per set (3.22), while fellow outside hitter
Dana Holger (So., Lino Lakes, Minn.) stayed slotted 12th (2.83). They are now fourth (3.79) and 13th (3.21), respectively, in points, with Cook moving up a spot to the No. 4 position.
Katie Pyles (Fr., Denver) now averages 7.69 assists per set, moving her up one spot to fifth in the conference.
Candice Johnson (Jr., Chuluota, Fla.) is 11th in digs (200, 3.39 per), down one from prior to Tuesday's match.
