Game Notes
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 5 Nova Southeastern women's basketball team travels for their furthest road trip of the regular season this weekend, to Louisville, Ky., to take part in Bellarmine University's pre-Thanksgiving tournament.
The Sharks (2-0), coming off of two wins over top-25 opponents (No. 22 Washburn and No. 7 Stonehill) in the NSU Tipoff Classic two weeks ago, will face off this Saturday and Sunday against Kentucky State and Ferris State.
Kentucky State enters Saturday's 1 p.m. matchup with a 2-1 record, splitting games at the Livingstone College (N.C.) Classic, and last defeating Central State, 65-53 on Nov. 16. The Thorobrettes were 15-12 last season.
On Sunday, also at 1 p.m., the Sharks take on Ferris State in what will be the Bulldogs' second game of the season (following Friday's opener with the hosts, Bellarmine). FSU had a 13-13 record a year ago, and received votes in the preseason USA Today Coaches' Poll.
The Sharks were led in their opening weekend by SSC Player of the Week
Richelle Carach (Sr., Naples, Fla.), who averaged a double-double with 19.5 points and 10 rebounds in the two wins. Each of those figures ties for second best in the conference, and the post player currently leads the league in field goal shooting at 77.8 percent.
Three of Carach's teammates are in double digits in scoring average: Danielle Robinson (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) at 14 per game, and Amanda Burakoski (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Taylor Buie (So., Puyallup, Wash.) each at an even dozen a contest.
Additionally, point guard
Jessica Russi (Sr., Lake Mary, Fla.), who set a new school record with 13 assists in the victory over Stonehill, is at 9.5 points a game, and her 7.5 assists per tops the SSC.
Jasmine Wilkins (Sr., Miami) is just behind her in scoring, averaging nine points, and also has had 14 rebounds in the first two games (second on the team and eighth in the conference).
The games will be a semi-homecoming for the team's midwestern players, Molly Blomer (So., West Chester, Ohio) and Alexis Murphy (So., Carlisle, Ohio), as well as newcomers Katie Barnard (Fr., Granger, Ind.) and Jessica Valley (Jr., Lafayette, Ind.). Also, Sharks head coach LeAnn Freeland will have a reunion with Bellarmine coaches Chancellor Dugan and Shannon Litton, who were the head coach and assistant, respectively, at the University of Southern Indiana when Freeland was a player.
