Tennis Falls to D-I North Florida

Sharks go 1-1 on opening weekend.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern tennis team (1-1) dropped its match against NCAA Division I North Florida (2-1), 9-0, Sunday at the NSU Tennis Complex.

The Sharks were in a hole early, as they dropped all three doubles matches. Alexandra Johansson (So., Sydney, Australia) and Carlee Rizzolo (Fr., Livingston, N.J.) were in the top flight and lost to Lorena Aviles and Melanie Aguirre, 8-2. Charlotte Cote (So., Montreal, Canada) and Austin Lavallii (Sr., Williamston, Mich.) teamed up for the second-straight day, falling to Taylor Hollander and Rebecca Pereira, 8-1.

In the third flight, Bianca Roberts (So., Tampa, Fla.) and Linda Kornienko (Fr., Fort Myers, Fla.) fell to Mariella Calderon and Simona Weymar, 8-4.

In singles play, Johansson lost her top flight match against UNF’s ace, Aviles, 6-2, 6-2. In the No. 2 slot, Rizzolo dropped her second singles match of the weekend to Weymar, 6-2, 6-1. In the next flight, Cote fell to a fresh player in Marina Cunningham, 6-3, 6-2.

In the bottom half of single play, Kornienko fought a close second set but ultimately lost to Hollander, 6-0, 6-4. In the fifth flight, Iryna Serdyuk (Fr., Boca Raton, Fla.) made her collegiate debut and fell to Pereira, 7-5, 6-3. In the final singles slot, Luisa Pintado (Fr., Guadalajara, Mexico) finished her weekend at 1-1 with a loss to Aguirre, 6-4, 6-2.

The Sharks will begin Sunshine State Conference play on Feb. 9 on the road against the Tampa Spartans at 10 a.m.
