ORLANDO, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern tennis team (4-4) started its spring break trip on a high note, defeating Saginaw Valley State (10-9) in Orlando, Fla., 8-1, Monday.
The Sharks earned the victory by sweeping doubles play against an overmatched northern opponent.
Sabrina Kierberg (Fr., Munich, Germany) earned her top flight victory against Yunjiao Shangguan, 6-1, 6-1. In the second flight,
Alexandra Johansson (So., Sydney, Australia) gave up a few points to Meghan Woody in the first set before sweeping the second to win, 6-3, 6-0.
Charlotte Cote (So., Montreal, Canada) returned to the third slot and won over Charlotte Wong, 6-3, 6-1.
In the fourth flight,
Bianca Roberts (So., Tampa, Fla.) earned her fourth victory of the year over Erin Doud, 6-1, 6-2. In fifth,
Iryna Serdyuk (Fr., Boca Raton, Fla.) defeated Katie Piorkowski, 6-0, 6-1. In the final slot,
Luisa Pintado (Fr., Guadalajara, Mexico) stretched her winning streak to five matches by defeating Sean Potter flawlessly, 6-0, 6-0.
The Sharks were not perfect in doubles play, as Kierberg and
Austin Lavallii (Sr., Williamston, Mich.) were upset in the No. 1 draw to Shangguan and Doud, 8-3. However, the Sharks took two points in the other draws, as Johansson and Cote defeated Wong and Woody, and
Linda Kornienko (Fr., Fort Myers, Fla.) and
Kamryn Blackwood (Farmington, N.M.) defeated Piorkowski and Potter. Each win finished by a score of 8-1.
The Sharks will return to the court in Orlando, Fla. on Wednesday to face NCAA Division I Toledo at 11:30 a.m.
